Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the action of free radicals and the mechanisms that neutralise them. It is widely believed that oxidative stress contributes to the development of atherosclerosis and thus to cardiovascular disease. Oxidative stress may cause diseases of the nervous system such as senile dementia, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, as well as cancer. Oxidative stress is also responsible for ageing of the body, eye diseases and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.
